Each year, the month of October is sponsored by the Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care in honor of individuals living in long-term care facilities. The focus is on awareness of dignity, respect, and the value of each individual resident. This year’s theme for Residents’ Rights Month 2015 is “CARE Matters”, with the intention of bringing about attention to quality care.

Residents’ rights celebrations began in 1981 when nursing home residents called for a time to honor residents and their rights. The celebration was originally observed for a single week each October, but then in October 2011 the Consumer Voice expanded commemoration to take place for a full month.

This time is also meant to honor those who keep dignity alive in nursing homes, as well as embracing the rights that were set forth by the Nursing Home Reform Law of 1987.

Setting aside one month a year helps in recognizing residents, their care providers, advocates and organizations that support the rights of nursing home residents.

If you suspect your loved one is suffering from nursing home abuse, or you believe you may have witnessed an act of elder, take a stand and speak out. Together we can stand united in the fight against nursing home abuse and neglect.
